Second Hand vs New Office Chairs in Bangladesh: The Real Cost
Used chairs look cheaper on the price tag. Here is what they actually cost once you count faults, repairs and zero warranty.
1What used office chairs actually sell for in BD
Second hand chairs are usually sold through Facebook Marketplace groups, Bikroy and used-furniture shops. Prices swing widely depending on brand, age and how the seller describes the condition, and the description is often generous.
The sticker difference can be small. A used chair that needs a new gas lift or castors within months quickly erases the saving. For a wider look at what new models cost, see our guide to office chair price in BD.
2The five things that fail first on a used chair
A chair can look perfect and still be close to the end of its life. These are the parts that go first, and the first two are the usual failure points.
Gas lift
The cylinder slowly loses pressure, so the seat sinks while you work. It cannot be topped up, only replaced.
Castors
Worn or cracked wheels make the chair wobble and scratch floors. Cheap to swap, but a sign of heavy use.
Seat foam
Compressed foam goes flat and stops supporting you, especially after years of daily use.
Mesh back
Mesh stretches and sags over time, and the lumbar support you paid for disappears.
Tilt mechanism
A loose or stuck tilt is hard to see in a quick test and expensive to fix.

3No warranty, no returns: what that costs you
When you buy used, the sale is final. If the gas lift fails in week three, the repair is yours to pay for, and so is the time spent finding a technician. There is also no one to call if the chair arrives different from the photos.
| What goes wrong | Used chair | New chair (under warranty) |
|---|---|---|
| Gas lift fails | You pay for repair | Covered in year one |
| Chair not as described | No return | Clear support route |
| Defect on arrival | Your problem | Replacement or fix |
4Hygiene and mesh degradation over time
A used chair has absorbed years of someone else’s sweat, dust and humidity, and Bangladesh’s climate speeds that up. Fabric and foam hold moisture, and deep cleaning rarely restores them fully.
Mesh is the other quiet problem. It looks fine from a distance but loses tension, so you sit lower and your lower back loses support. Sitting on a worn-out chair for eight hours a day is a comfort issue first and a health issue over time.
5Cost per year of use: used vs new
The fairest way to compare is cost per year, not price tag. Divide the total you spend (purchase plus repairs) by the years the chair stays usable.
A used chair often has fewer good years left, so even a lower price can mean a higher yearly cost. Browse current options in our shop to compare against real prices.

6When second hand genuinely makes sense
Buying used is not always a mistake. It can work when:
- You need a chair for a short period, such as a temporary office or a few months of work.
- You can inspect it in person and test every function before paying.
- The seller is a trusted source, ideally someone you know or a shop that offers a short return window.
- You have a repair budget set aside for the gas lift or castors.
If you will sit in it daily for years, a new chair with a warranty is usually the safer call.
7Inspection checklist before buying used
If you do buy used, go in person and check every item below before you hand over any money.
- Gas lift: sit down, wait a minute. Does the seat sink?
- Castors: roll the chair. Look for cracks, flat spots and wobble.
- Seat foam: press firmly. It should spring back, not stay flat.
- Mesh or backrest: look for sagging, tears and loose stitching.
- Tilt and lock: lean back and test that it locks and releases smoothly.
- Armrests and base: check for cracks, loose screws and rust.
- Smell and stains: a musty smell means moisture deep in the foam.
